Every Company looks after to hire the best suitable candidate in their organization. After all, this decision determines whether your projects are going to succeed or fail. Hiring process is ongoing in every field but I would like to share my thoughts on the procedure that would help in selection of the best SEO candidate.

I believe, selecting the best SEO candidate is the secondary step & determining the job requirements is a primary one. Firstly the recruiter need to be clear about the talent required to meet organizational objectives like what would be the level of SEO candidate (Junior/Senior/Manager) and what sort of activities he/ she would be responsible later on. Once pre-requisites are drafted in mind, you actually start to dig for the suitable talent. There are variations in hiring the best SEO candidate as per the junior & senior levels. But still there are some basic skill sets & parameters to follow.

The interview process by the recruiter can be conducted through the following procedure taking in consideration the levels of SEO to select the best candidate :

1) Asking them some technical questions like:
•    Use of a Canonical tag
•    What are the quality parameters that should be followed during link building activities?
•    Queries related to Webmaster like Parameter handling,  Disavow tool, Reconsideration Request
•    Queries related to Google analytics like Visits, Impressions, Page views, Demographic Location etc.
•    Basic HTML coding & Sitemaps – HTML vs XML
•    What are the seo tools on which they have worked till now?

2) Evaluating their strategy & tactics Skills
•    What strategy they would follow to rank a particular keyword?
•    What are their favorite link building tactics?
•    What strategy they will follow if the website traffic is dropping?
•    How to judge the value of a link?

3) Review their current projects and assess the performance of those projects.

4) Judging their knowledge related to latest SEO news & Updates.

Last but not the least, follow the basic guidelines of hiring. Look out for the people who proved to be a good team player& coordinator in the long term. Ensure that the candidate must have the positive attitude & should be able to face challenges.

The SEO job profile is dynamic in nature and it is certain that it will be more demanding in the coming years. Some metrics which are significant today would be less relevant as newer ones will emerge. However, irrespective of these changes in metrics, the basic motto of search engine will always remain the same – providing users with the most relevant and filtered results containing least spam content.

Traditionally, SEO job was all about building referral links from web directories, articles & bookmarking websites. However in the current scenario it is more about maintaining web presence through various channels like bloggers outreach, guest blog posting, face-book graph search, info-graphics etc. So, as long as you are adaptable you will get ample opportunities to showcase your talent and will have a rewarding career.
Though, currently computer and laptops are primarily being used for conducting searches, the use of smart phones and voice commands technology e.g.  Apple “Siri” is rapidly growing. Smart SEO would be one who keeps pace with the advances in hardware /technology and is able to optimize the website for different platforms and devices.

Even the marketing divisions prefer to allocate a greater proportion of their budget in SEO as organic results are still getting majority of the clicks in comparison to PPC. Investors are therefore finding SEO as a valuable & cost effective tactics rather than any other tactic offline or online.

In the future, SEO needs to constantly update himself with search engine news /developments, so that he gets alerted on time towards minute signals and devise strategy accordingly before a major algorithm update occurs. As a SEO you will be facing many challenges. The fact that there are no fixed rules will further complicate your job.  A multidisciplinary approach and ability to simultaneously work on different fronts e.g. designing, coding & content crafting will help you in facing these challenges.

As the Head of SEO at Envigo Marketing, I always prefer to have people with great analytical skills, creativity, industrial knowledge, marketing tactics and quality work in my team.  I have interviewed so many SEO candidates and noticed that most of them have either the lack of profile knowledge or do not know about pre requisites of the job requirements.

SEO tactics & processes have changed in 2013 after Google algorithm changes. Let’s understand the basic knowhow of the profile and responsibilities with the changed SEO tactics in 2013:
1. Understanding Job Description:  Reading job description carefully will help you to prepare for upcoming questions from the Interviewer. Find out what the company is about and what do they expect out of the candidate for the available position.  You should try to approach the company as though you are pitching for a client.
2. Approaching Employer: Submit your resume with complete details of your experience and skills.  Mention achievements you have made and any challenges you have overcome so far in a previous job role. Describe if you have done any work on International Projects. Describe your success & failures (obstacles). Any major accomplishment related to SEO experience might impress the Interviewer.
3. Talking about your experience: When you have to showcase your performance, take a laptop with you and show them your traffic growth on Google analytics and what kind of changes would you suggest to improve upon the same. This kind of interaction will help the interviewer to understand your growth in last few years of your experience.
4. Any SEO tool you used? : Giving details of SEO tools and how you utilize them for websites expresses your analytical skills.
5. Technical Aspects: HTML, CSS, XML, CMS knowledge is required to be selected for the Job. These are important languages which should be optimized according to search engines.  Knowledge about important tags or codes can help you to understand technical issues due to which website does not appear on the search engines.
6. Content Quality:  One of the most important parts of SEO is the quality of content. Google has become stricter in terms of quality of content. Unique & without grammatical mistakes content impresses not only the interviewer but also Google.
